Chemically composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂), ametrine belongs to the silicate mineral group and crystallizes in the trigonal crystal system, like other quartz varieties. In gem-quality specimens, it typically displays a vitreous luster and transparent clarity.
The refractive index of ametrine generally ranges from 1.544 to 1.553, resulting in a soft, balanced brilliance rather than strong dispersion. Natural ametrine is found almost exclusively in Bolivia, where geological conditions allow the coexistence of both color zones within a single crystal.
