Frequently Asked Questions

What is topaz?

Topaz is an aluminum silicate gemstone that forms large, clean crystals and takes an exceptional polish. It ranges from colorless through blues to golden, pink-orange imperial tones.

Is blue topaz natural?

The starting material is natural topaz, but nearly all blue color on the market is created by irradiating and heating colorless stones. The result is stable and safe, and we state it on every listing.

What is imperial topaz?

Imperial topaz is the natural golden to pinkish-orange variety, mined chiefly around Ouro Preto in Brazil. It is the rarest and most valuable form of the species, with pink-tinged stones at the top.

What is the difference between London, Swiss, and sky blue topaz?

They are trade names for depth of blue: sky is the palest, Swiss a vivid mid-blue, London the deepest, steely tone. All three owe their color to the same irradiation and heating process.

Is topaz durable enough for daily wear?

Topaz measures 8 on the Mohs scale, harder than quartz gems. It handles daily wear well, though its perfect cleavage means a sharp knock can split it, so protective ring settings are sensible.

How is topaz quality evaluated?

Even color, eye-clean clarity, and cut quality carry the value. Because clean material is abundant, a topaz with visible inclusions gives up value quickly, and precise cutting separates fine stones from commercial goods.

What documentation comes with a stone?

Every topaz ships with the Sosna Gems Colored Stone Report, our internal documentation. Independent laboratory certification can be arranged on request for any stone.

Can you source a topaz beyond the visible selection?

Yes. The online collection is only part of our sourcing reach. Contact us with your preferred color, size, and budget and we will search individually.

How do I choose between two similar topazes?

Look at the cut before the color. Two stones of identical hue separate on how evenly they return light, and a well-proportioned topaz will outshine a heavier, deeper stone cut for weight instead of beauty.
