Kunzite

Kunzite is the gem for people who love things that ask something of them: a lilac-pink glow, serious size for the money, and a nature best suited to evening light. We explain exactly how to own one well, because that honesty is the difference between delight and disappointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is kunzite?

Kunzite is the lilac-pink variety of the mineral spodumene, named after the gemologist George Kunz. It forms large, clean crystals in a pink-violet color no other gem species repeats.

Does kunzite really fade?

Kunzite's color can fade with prolonged exposure to strong sunlight, a property of the species itself. Worn as an evening and indoor gem, it keeps its color for generations, and we say this plainly rather than let a customer learn it in July.

Is kunzite treated?

Some kunzite on the wider market is irradiated or heated to deepen its pink. We state the treatment status on every listing individually.

How is kunzite quality evaluated?

Depth of the lilac-pink carries the value, and it depends on the cutter orienting the crystal correctly, because kunzite shows different colors along different axes. Clean, definite color is scarce; pale material is common.

Is kunzite durable enough for daily wear?

Kunzite measures 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale but carries perfect cleavage, so it belongs in pendants and earrings by preference and in rings worn for occasions rather than daily.

How should I care for kunzite?

Clean only with lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth. No ultrasonic or steam cleaners, no display in direct sunlight, and storage away from harder stones.

Why is kunzite so affordable for its size?

Because fine spodumene crystals grow large and clean, ten-carat kunzites remain attainable in a way no pink sapphire or spinel of that size ever will. The species' care requirements keep mass demand modest, which works in a collector's favor.

What documentation comes with a stone?

Every kunzite ships with the Sosna Gems Colored Stone Report, our internal documentation. Independent laboratory certification can be arranged on request for any stone.

Can you source a kunzite beyond the visible selection?

Yes. The online collection is only part of our sourcing reach. Contact us with your preferred depth of color and size and we will search individually.
