Aquamarine is the blue variety of beryl, the same mineral family that produces emerald and morganite, and the family resemblance shapes how it should be judged. Where emerald is expected to carry inclusions, aquamarine is expected to be clean. An aquamarine with visible inclusions gives up value quickly, because the material allows near-flawless clarity and the market knows it. Color runs from pale sky blue to the saturated, slightly greenish-free blue traded as Santa Maria, a term that began with a Brazilian mine and now describes the top color grade wherever the stone was found. Depth of blue carries most of the value: fine color in a small stone outranks pale color in a large one, and truly saturated material above a few carats is far scarcer than the abundance of pale goods implies.
