Sphalerite is a zinc sulfide mineral valued in gem-quality form for its exceptional dispersion and intense fire, which can exceed that of many more commonly used gemstones. Its visual character is defined by strong light separation and rich color saturation, typically appearing in golden yellow, orange, brown, or reddish tones.
Chemically composed of zinc sulfide (ZnS), sphalerite crystallizes in the cubic crystal system and belongs to the sulfide mineral group. In transparent gem-quality specimens, it typically displays an adamantine to resinous luster, contributing to its striking brilliance.
The refractive index of sphalerite generally ranges from approximately 2.37 to 2.42, combined with very high dispersion, resulting in pronounced fire and vivid light performance.
