In gem-quality material, apatite is appreciated for its bright, saturated colors and natural transparency, which can closely resemble more well-known gemstones.
Chemically, apatite is a calcium phosphate mineral, typically described by the formula Ca₅(PO₄)₃(F,Cl,OH). It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system and belongs to the phosphate mineral group. Gem-quality apatite usually displays a vitreous luster with transparent to slightly translucent clarity.
The refractive index of apatite generally ranges from approximately 1.628 to 1.649, contributing to a noticeable brilliance and strong color presence rather than high dispersion. Apatite is found in several regions worldwide, with notable sources including Brazil, Madagascar, Myanmar, Mexico, and Sri Lanka.

Durability & suitability
