The refractive index of emerald generally ranges from approximately 1.57 to 1.60, resulting in a restrained brilliance that emphasizes color rather than sparkle. Emeralds are found in several regions worldwide, with notable sources including Colombia, Zambia, Brazil, Afghanistan, and Ethiopia, each associated with distinct visual characteristics.

With a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, emerald offers good resistance to scratching; however, its durability is influenced by the presence of natural inclusions, which are common and expected in this gemstone. These internal characteristics can make emerald more sensitive to impact compared to other beryl varieties.
