Apatite is a group of phosphate minerals known for their vivid and often striking color range, most commonly appearing in shades of blue, green, and teal. In gem-quality material, apatite is appreciated for its bright, saturated colors and natural transparency, which can closely resemble more well-known gemstones.
Chemically, apatite is a calcium phosphate mineral, typically described by the formula Ca₅(PO₄)₃(F,Cl,OH). It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system and belongs to the phosphate mineral group. Gem-quality apatite usually displays a vitreous luster with transparent to slightly translucent clarity.
The refractive index of apatite generally ranges from approximately 1.628 to 1.649, contributing to a noticeable brilliance and strong color presence rather than high dispersion. Apatite is found in several regions worldwide, with notable sources including Brazil, Madagascar, Myanmar, Mexico, and Sri Lanka.

Durability & suitability

With a hardness of 5 on the Mohs scale, apatite is considered a relatively soft gemstone compared to many commonly used jewelry stones. While it can be used in jewelry, it is best suited for designs that minimize exposure to impact, such as pendants, earrings, and protected settings.
