In natural daylight, alexandrite typically appears green to bluish-green, while under incandescent light it displays red to purplish-red hues, a phenomenon known as color change.
Chemically composed of beryllium aluminum oxide (BeAl₂O₄), alexandrite crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and belongs to the oxide mineral group. In gem-quality specimens, it typically displays a vitreous luster with transparent clarity.
The refractive index of alexandrite generally ranges from approximately 1.741 to 1.760, contributing to a balanced brilliance that supports, rather than overwhelms, its color-changing behavior. Natural alexandrite is found in a limited number of locations worldwide, including Russia, Brazil, Sri Lanka, and parts of East Africa.
