Alexandrite is a rare color-changing variety of chrysoberyl, valued for its distinct ability to shift color under different lighting conditions. In natural daylight, alexandrite typically appears green to bluish-green, while under incandescent light it displays red to purplish-red hues, a phenomenon known as color change.
Chemically composed of beryllium aluminum oxide (BeAl₂O₄), alexandrite crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and belongs to the oxide mineral group. In gem-quality specimens, it typically displays a vitreous luster with transparent clarity.
The refractive index of alexandrite generally ranges from approximately 1.741 to 1.760, contributing to a balanced brilliance that supports, rather than overwhelms, its color-changing behavior. Natural alexandrite is found in a limited number of locations worldwide, including Russia, Brazil, Sri Lanka, and parts of East Africa.

With a hardness of approximately 8.5 on the Mohs scale, alexandrite offers very good durability suitable for everyday jewelry when properly set and worn with standard care. Its lack of cleavage contributes to strong resistance against impact and abrasion compared to many other color-changing gemstones.
Alexandrite performs well in rings, pendants, earrings, and bracelets, including designs intended for regular wear.
