Garnet

Garnet is where collectors quietly find color the famous names charge fortunes for: raspberry rhodolite, glowing orange spessartite, greens that stand next to emerald. Untreated as standard and chosen stone by stone from across the garnet family, with documentation included.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is garnet?

Garnet is a family of related mineral species rather than a single stone. The family covers deep red almandine and pyrope, raspberry rhodolite, orange spessartite, honey Mali garnet, and green grossular varieties including tsavorite.

Are garnets treated?

Garnets are one of the few gem families where untreated is the norm. The stones in our collection are untreated as standard, and treatment status is stated on every listing.

What colors do garnets come in?

Nearly every color except blue. Red dominates the market, but rhodolite leans raspberry, spessartite is orange, Mali garnet is honey to yellowish green, and tsavorite is a saturated green that rivals emerald.

What is tsavorite?

Tsavorite is the green variety of grossular garnet, found mainly in Kenya and Tanzania. Fine tsavorite above two carats is scarcer than comparable emerald, and unlike emerald it is typically untreated and eye clean.

How is garnet quality evaluated?

By species. In reds the goal is depth without blackness, a stone that stays lively in low light. In oranges, a clean open color. In tsavorite, saturation and clarity carry almost the entire value.

Is garnet durable enough for daily wear?

Garnets measure roughly 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale depending on species, which suits rings, pendants, and earrings in regular wear. Protective settings are sensible for everyday rings.

What documentation comes with a stone?

Every garnet ships with the Sosna Gems Colored Stone Report, our internal documentation. Independent laboratory certification can be arranged on request for any stone.

Can you source a garnet beyond the visible selection?

Yes. The online collection is only part of our sourcing reach. Contact us with the species, color, and size you are looking for, and we will search individually.

How do I choose between two similar garnets?

Judge them in evening light. Many red garnets look identical in daylight and separate sharply at dusk, where the finer stone keeps its red and the weaker one goes dark. That behavior matters more than a small difference in weight.
