What is gem silica?

Gem silica is a blue to blue-green variety of chalcedony, the cryptocrystalline form of quartz, colored by copper. It is the most valuable member of the chalcedony family and is also sold under the names chrysocolla chalcedony and gem silica chrysocolla.

Is gem silica the same as chrysocolla?

No. Chrysocolla is a soft copper mineral that measures roughly 2 to 4 on the Mohs scale and is unsuitable for rings. Gem silica is chalcedony that has taken its color from copper, which gives it the hardness and polish of quartz. The two share a color, not a structure.

Why is gem silica the most expensive chalcedony?

It forms only where copper mineralization and silica deposition happen together, which is geologically uncommon. The best historic source in Arizona is effectively exhausted, and translucent material has never appeared in commercial quantities. Most chalcedony sells for a few dollars per carat; fine gem silica does not.

Is gem silica treated?

Gem silica is untreated as standard. The market problem is substitution rather than treatment: dyed chalcedony and stabilized chrysocolla are both sold under the same name. Any deviation from natural, untreated material is stated on the individual listing.

Where does gem silica come from?

The Globe-Miami district of Gila County, Arizona, and above all the Inspiration Mine, produced the finest known material, and that source has largely ended. Smaller quantities have come from New Mexico, Mexico, Peru, Taiwan, and the Philippines. We state the documented origin for each stone.

What makes one gem silica better than another?

Translucency first, then evenness of color. A stone that glows when light passes through it outranks a larger opaque one. Brown or green patches, visible matrix, and surface pitting all reduce value.

Is gem silica durable enough for a ring?

Yes. At Mohs 7 it matches amethyst and citrine and suits daily wear. A cabochon dome sits higher than a faceted stone, so protect it from hard knocks and choose a bezel or protective setting for a ring worn every day.

Why is gem silica almost always cut as a cabochon?

A domed surface displays translucency and saturated color better than facets, and the material seldom occurs clean enough for faceting. Faceted gem silica exists but is rare and priced accordingly.

How can I tell gem silica from dyed chalcedony?

Dyed material tends to show color concentrated in fractures and along the base rather than distributed evenly through the stone. Under magnification the color often looks applied rather than internal. Independent laboratory testing settles the question, and we can arrange it on request.
