Padparadscha Sapphire Information

In late 2016, miners at Bemainty near Ambatondrazaka in eastern Madagascar began pulling sapphires out of the ground in a perfect lotus blend of pink and orange. Within weeks of reaching daylight, many of them had turned plain pink. The stones had lost, in the most literal sense, the most expensive word in the sapphire trade.

That episode forced gemological laboratories to do something unusual: agree on what a padparadscha actually is, and build a test that can take the name away. Every other sapphire is defined by what sits inside the crystal. Padparadscha is defined by a committee, a color chart, and a lamp. This article covers what the word means, why the color is so rare in nature, the definition the major labs harmonized, the fade test every serious buyer should know about, where the stones come from, and what they realistically cost in 2026.

A Color Agreement Layered on a Mineral

Padparadscha is corundum, the same aluminium oxide (Al2O3) that forms blue sapphire and ruby, showing a delicate blend of pink and orange in light to medium tones. The name comes from the Sinhalese word for the lotus blossom, derived from the Sanskrit padma raga, lotus color. Sri Lankan tradition holds the lotus sacred, and the comparison is older than any laboratory: a pale aquatic flower whose petals shade from pink into apricot, caught in a stone.

Everything about the gem follows standard corundum physics. Hardness 9 on the Mohs scale, refractive index around 1.762 to 1.770, specific gravity near 4.0, trigonal crystal system, no cleavage. What separates a padparadscha from its siblings is purely chromatic, and the boundaries are contested on both sides: toward pink sapphire when the orange fades, and toward orange sapphire when the pink does. Dealers call them pads. The nickname is affectionate. The paperwork behind it is anything but casual.

Why Pink and Orange Rarely Meet in One Crystal

The pink component of a padparadscha comes from trace chromium replacing aluminium in the crystal lattice, the same impurity that in higher concentration makes ruby. The orange component has a different and less reliable source: color centers, sites in the lattice where trapped electrical charges absorb light. For a padparadscha to exist, a crystal needs just enough chromium for a soft pink and an orange overlay from color centers or trace iron, in proportions that leave the blend pastel rather than red, brown, or salmon-dark.

Geology rarely mixes this cocktail. Chromium-bearing corundum usually forms in environments that push the stone toward pink or red; iron-rich environments push it toward yellow, green, or blue. The narrow overlap where both mechanisms operate gently, at low saturation, is why fine padparadschas are scarce even in deposits that produce sapphires by the ton. The color-center part of the recipe also carries the seed of the padparadscha's central problem. Some color centers are stable for geological time. Others hold their charge only until light shakes it loose.

The Definition Seven Laboratories Agreed On

The controlling definition today comes from the LMHC, the Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee, a working group of leading gemological laboratories including GIA, SSEF and Gübelin that publishes harmonized wording for lab reports. Its Information Sheet #4 defines padparadscha and, just as importantly, lists what disqualifies a stone from the name. It is worth remembering what kind of statement this is: a trade appellation layered on mineralogy, issued by laboratories, carrying exactly as much weight as the laboratory that prints it. Two consequences follow. First, a vivid, deeply saturated orange-pink can be a magnificent sapphire and still fail the definition; several famous auction stones sit outside the LMHC range by tone alone. Second, the market has never fully accepted a single definition. Some Sri Lankan dealers maintain that only Ceylon stones deserve the word, and individual laboratories still draw the color boundary slightly differently. Two respected labs can look at the same borderline stone and print different names on the report. With padparadscha, that difference is money.

The Fade Test: How a Sapphire Can Lose Its Name

The Bemainty material of 2016 and 2017 exposed a weakness that had been known in the literature for decades and ignored in practice: in some stones, the orange component comes from unstable trapped-hole color centers. Ultraviolet light charges them up, so a stone looks convincingly padparadscha fresh from the ground or after a sunny window display. Ordinary daylight then slowly discharges them, and the stone settles into plain pink. Research published by SSEF and others from 2018 onward showed the effect was concentrated in, though never exclusive to, the Ambatondrazaka deposit.

The laboratories responded by making color stability part of the definition. The harmonized LMHC protocol places the stone a few centimeters from a strong lamp with little to no UV component for at least three hours, then regrades the color. A stone that drifts out of the padparadscha range under the lamp is reported as pink or fancy sapphire, whatever it looked like on arrival. A lamp can now do what no amount of debate could: settle the name.

The practical instruction for buyers is simple. A padparadscha of any significant value should carry a recent report from a major laboratory, and the report should reflect stability testing, which LMHC member labs now perform as standard for this variety. Where Padparadscha Comes From

Sri Lanka is the historical and spiritual home of the stone. The gem gravels around Ratnapura have been worked for some two thousand years, the Sinhalese language named the color, and Ceylon stones still carry a premium among collectors who treat origin as part of the definition. Production is artisanal, mechanized mining is banned, and fine pads surface a few stones at a time.

Madagascar changed the market twice. The Ilakaka discoveries from 1998 onward made the island a major sapphire source and put meaningful numbers of padparadscha-colored stones into circulation at accessible prices. The Bemainty find near Ambatondrazaka in late 2016 then supplied both genuine, stable padparadschas and the unstable material that triggered the fade-test era. Tanzania's Tunduru gravels have contributed stones in the right color range since the 1990s. Under the LMHC definition all of these qualify; under the purist Ceylon-only view, none of the African stones do. Treatments: Heat Is Tolerated, Everything Else Ends the Name

Customary heating, the same furnace treatment applied to most sapphires, is accepted within the padparadscha definition and must always be disclosed on the report. Unheated stones with laboratory confirmation command a substantial premium, routinely double the price of comparable heated material, because the pastel color in an untouched crystal is the rarest version of an already rare event.

Beryllium diffusion sits in a different category entirely. Discovered in the trade around 2001, the process diffuses beryllium into the surface of a sapphire at extreme temperature and can manufacture convincing orange-pink colors from cheap starting material. A beryllium-diffused stone is never a padparadscha under any laboratory definition. It is a fundamentally different product in its own price category, and any seller using the word padparadscha for diffused goods is misusing it. Rarity, Prices, and Famous Stones in 2026

Padparadscha is among the most expensive of all sapphires, and the market has tightened since Princess Eugenie's 2018 engagement ring put a pad in front of a global audience. Most finished stones weigh under two carats; anything above three carats with fine, laboratory-confirmed color is an event. The ranges below are indicative retail figures observed in 2026, and any individual stone's value depends on its own quality and documentation, above all on color balance, stability confirmation, and treatment status.

At the top of the market, the untreated 24.58-carat Du Pont Padparadscha of confirmed Sri Lankan origin sold for $930,000 in 2020. Auction results at this level say little about ordinary stones; they mark where the ceiling sits when size, origin, purity of color, and an untouched crystal coincide in one gem. Buying a Padparadscha in Practice

Three checks do most of the work: a report from a named major laboratory that reflects color stability testing, explicit treatment status, and your own eyes on the color balance, because within the definition the pink-to-orange ratio is personal taste with no right answer. A useful trick when judging balance: set the stone beside a pink sapphire and it will read orange; set it beside an orange sapphire and the pink steps forward. Only in isolation does the blend resolve into itself.

Clarity deserves more attention here than in blue sapphire. Pastel stones hide nothing; an inclusion that would vanish in a saturated royal blue sits in plain view in a light orangy pink, so eye-clean pads carry a real premium. Care

At hardness 9 and with no cleavage, padparadscha handles daily wear as well as any sapphire and suits engagement rings without reservation. Warm soapy water and a soft brush clean it safely; ultrasonic cleaning is fine for untreated and conventionally heated stones. The one padparadscha-specific habit worth adopting is sensible light hygiene for undocumented stones: a pad without a modern stability-tested report should spend time in normal daylight before you judge, or pay for, its color.
