When buying a gemstone, one of the key aspects to understand is clarity. Along with color, cut, and carat weight, clarity is part of the "Four Cs" that define a gem's quality. But what exactly does clarity mean, and why is it important?
What Is Clarity?
Clarity refers to how free a gemstone is from internal or external flaws, also known as inclusions and blemishes.
- Inclusions are tiny natural features inside the gem – like crystals, fractures, or feather-like lines.
- Blemishes appear on the surface – such as scratches or pits.
These features are often formed naturally as the gemstone grows underground. Most gems have some inclusions – and that’s completely normal.
Why Does Clarity Matter?
- Clarity affects the beauty and transparency of the gem
- It can impact value – though not always as much as color or rarity
- In some cases, inclusions can even help identify natural origin, adding authenticity
At Sosna Gems, we believe in honest, transparent grading. We clearly state clarity in our product descriptions and certificates.
Common Clarity Grades
Gemstones don’t follow a single universal clarity scale like diamonds, but the following is a widely accepted breakdown used by many gemological labs:
- IF (Internally Flawless): No visible inclusions even under 10x magnification
- VVS (Very Very Slightly Included): Minute inclusions, extremely hard to detect
- VS (Very Slightly Included): Minor inclusions, difficult to see with the naked eye
- SI (Slightly Included): Inclusions are visible under magnification and may be visible to the eye
- I (Included): Inclusions are noticeable to the eye and may affect transparency
Note: Colored gemstones are graded more leniently than diamonds, as inclusions are more common and accepted – especially in stones like emerald, ruby, or tourmaline.
What Clarity Should You Choose?
It depends on:
- The type of gem – Some, like emeralds, almost always have inclusions
- How it will be worn – Rings get more scrutiny than earrings
- Your preference – Some inclusions are barely noticeable, while others give character
At Sosna Gems, we offer only natural gemstones and clearly specify clarity in every listing – so you can make an informed choice.

Important Considerations:
- Clarity grading applies only to transparent gemstones. Opaque stones are typically classified simply as translucent or opaque and do not receive clarity grades in the same way.
- Clarity is assessed in loose, unmounted stones under 10× magnification, viewed at a 90-degree angle to the table. Once set in jewelry, many inclusions may become hidden under prongs or bezels.
-
Clarity expectations vary by gemstone type. For example:
- Burmese rubies typically show more inclusions and cloudiness than blue or yellow sapphires.
- Rubellite tourmaline tends to have more inclusions than other tourmalines.
At Sosna Gems, we always assess clarity according to gem-specific standards and provide honest, realistic grading in every listing.
